If you're looking for places to visit in India in winter, you're in luck: November to February is the best travel season for most of the country. The deserts cool down, the beaches dry out after the monsoon, the backwaters are calm, the wildlife parks reopen, and the hills get crisp blue skies (and, if you're lucky, snow).
Here are 12 winter trips across India, from the Thar desert to the Brahmaputra floodplains. For each one we've listed the best months, how many days to give it, and what a night's stay costs. The numbers come from JrnyLoop's destination guides, the same ones the app plans trips with. At the end, you'll find how to plan any of them in a few minutes.

"Budget stay from" is a simple room for two in JrnyLoop's Budget stay style. Comfort and Premium stays cost more; see how to plan a budget trip in India for how the styles compare.
1. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan: the golden fort and the Thar dunes
Jaisalmer is the desert trip that winter was made for. Its sandstone fort is a living one, with homes, shops and guesthouses still inside the walls, and in the low winter sun the whole city turns gold.
Spend a day on the fort, the carved Patwon ki Haveli and Gadisar Lake, then head out to the Sam sand dunes for a sunset safari and a night in a desert camp. Fit in the abandoned village of Kuldhara and the cenotaphs of Bada Bagh on the way. Try ker sangri, the desert's signature dish of dried beans and berries.
- Best months: October to March · Ideal trip: 2–3 days
- Stay: inside the fort for character, or a camp at Sam (meals usually included)
- Getting there: the railway station is in town, and overnight trains run from Delhi and Jaipur
Desert nights are cold in December and January. Carry a proper warm layer for the dunes, even if the afternoon felt like summer.
2. Rann of Kutch, Gujarat: the white desert
The Rann is a vast salt flat that's under water in the monsoon and dries into a white desert by winter. It's one of India's strangest and most beautiful landscapes, especially on a full-moon night, when the salt glows.
Base yourself near Dhordo, where the winter tent city of the Rann Utsav sets up, or stay in a craft village like Hodka or Bhujodi for something more local. Drive up Kala Dongar, the highest point in Kutch, for the view across the Rann, and give half a day to Bhuj for the Aina Mahal palace and the embroidery and block-printing villages around it.
- Best months: November to February · Ideal trip: 2–3 days
- Stay: from about ₹1,200 in Bhuj to ₹6,000 and up for the tent city
- Getting there: Bhuj has a railway station and an airport, about 80 km from the White Rann
You'll need an entry permit for the White Rann, available online or at the checkpost on the way. Carry ID, and check the Rann Utsav's dates for the season before you book around it.
3. Udaipur, Rajasthan: lakes and palace sunsets
Udaipur is Rajasthan at its most romantic: white palaces on Lake Pichola, rooftop dinners and sunsets you'll photograph a dozen times. Winter days are warm and the evenings cool enough for a shawl.
See the City Palace, take a boat on Lake Pichola, catch the folk dance show at Bagore ki Haveli in the evening and drive up to the Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace for sunset. With a spare day, the walls of Kumbhalgarh Fort are a beautiful drive away.
- Best months: September to March · Ideal trip: 2–4 days
- Stay: Lal Ghat in the old city for the lake views, Hanuman Ghat for cheaper rooms
- Getting there: the railway station is in the city, and the airport about 22 km out
Book a lake-facing rooftop for at least one dinner. It's the Udaipur evening everyone remembers.
4. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh: misty mornings on the ghats
Winter mornings in Varanasi are something else: mist on the Ganga, boats slipping past 80-odd ghats, and the city waking up to bells and chai. Go once and it stays with you.
Take a sunrise boat ride, walk the ghats from Assi to Dashashwamedh, and be at Dashashwamedh in the evening for the Ganga Aarti. Visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple, eat kachori sabzi for breakfast and a lassi in the lanes, and give half a day to Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon.
- Best months: October to March · Ideal trip: 2–3 days
- Stay: Assi Ghat for budget rooms, Dashashwamedh and Godowlia to be in the thick of it
- Getting there: Varanasi is well connected by train, and the airport is about 25 km away
December and January bring thick fog to north India. Trains and early flights are often delayed, so keep a buffer before anything you can't miss. The lanes are too narrow for cars: park near Godowlia and walk, and agree the boat fare before you get in.
5. Goa: beaches at their best
Goa's season runs from about October to March, and winter is the heart of it: calm seas, clear skies and every beach shack open. It's also the busiest and priciest time, especially between Christmas and New Year, so book early if you're going then.
North Goa (Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, Arambol) is lively, with the flea market and the forts at Aguada and Chapora. South Goa (Palolem, Agonda) is slower and quieter. Don't skip Fontainhas, Panjim's Latin quarter, or the churches of Old Goa, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus.
- Best months: October to March · Ideal trip: 3–5 days
- Stay: split your stay; North and South Goa are about two hours apart
- Getting there: trains stop at Madgaon and Thivim, and Goa has two airports
Rent a scooter (about ₹400–500 a day) and you can reach most beaches on your own schedule.
6. Gokarna, Karnataka: Goa's quieter neighbour
If Goa feels too busy, Gokarna is a few hours south: a temple town with a string of beaches you walk between. The classic day is the beach trek from Kudle over the headlands to Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches.
Visit the Mahabaleshwar Temple in town, watch the sunset from Kudle, and eat at the beach cafés. It's simpler than Goa, which is exactly the point.
- Best months: October to March · Ideal trip: 2–3 days
- Stay: Kudle Beach for budget huts, Om Beach for nicer resorts
- Getting there: Gokarna Road station is about 10 km away; the nearest airport is in Goa
Carry plenty of water on the beach trek. There are very few shops between the beaches.
7. Hampi, Karnataka: boulders and a lost empire
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire, and its temples, bazaars and royal enclosures lie scattered across a landscape of giant boulders by the Tungabhadra river. It's hot for most of the year, which makes winter the time to go.
See the Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple and its famous stone chariot, the Royal Enclosure and Lotus Mahal. Climb Hemakuta Hill or Matanga Hill for sunrise or sunset, and take a round coracle boat across the river.
- Best months: October to February · Ideal trip: 2–3 days
- Stay: Hampi Bazaar or across the river on "Hippie Island" for budget stays
- Getting there: Hosapete station is about 13 km away, and the nearest airport about 40 km
The ruins spread over about 25 square kilometres, so rent a bicycle or an e-scooter. The ferries to Hippie Island stop around 6 pm.
8. Alleppey, Kerala: a night on the backwaters
A night on a kettuvallam, the thatched houseboats of the Kerala backwaters, is one of India's great slow trips. In winter the weather is dry and the canals calm.
Cruise through the canals and paddy fields of Kuttanad, eat karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish in banana leaf) cooked on board, then take a shikara ride into the narrower canals the big boats can't reach. Finish with a quiet afternoon on Marari Beach.
- Best months: September to March · Ideal trip: 1–2 days
- Stay: a houseboat costs roughly ₹7,000–20,000 for the boat, meals usually included
- Getting there: Alleppey has a railway station; Kochi airport is about 80 km away
Book a government-approved houseboat, and check when the AC runs. On many boats it's only at night.
9. Munnar, Kerala: mornings in the tea hills
Munnar's tea estates roll on for miles, and winter mornings are cool, misty and green. It pairs well with Alleppey for a week in Kerala.
Visit Eravikulam National Park for the Nilgiri tahr, the Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam and the sunrise at Top Station. For the best views, book a jeep up to Kolukkumalai, one of the highest tea estates around.
- Best months: September to May · Ideal trip: 2–3 days
- Stay: Munnar town for budget rooms, Chinnakanal or Pallivasal for estate views
- Getting there: about 110 km by road from the nearest major station and from Kochi airport
Eravikulam usually closes for a few weeks around February and March, when the tahr have their young. Check before you plan your day around it.
10. Pondicherry: French lanes and the Bay of Bengal
Pondicherry is a long weekend that feels like a different country: mustard-yellow villas in White Town, a seaside Promenade, French bakeries and slow cafés. Winter brings pleasant days and cool evenings for walking.
Walk White Town in the morning, spend an afternoon at Paradise Beach or Serenity Beach, and visit Auroville and the Matrimandir viewing point. Rent a bicycle; it's the nicest way to get around.
- Best months: October to March · Ideal trip: 2–3 days
- Stay: White Town for the heritage villas, Auroville or Serenity Beach for cheaper stays
- Getting there: Pondicherry has a railway station, and Chennai's airport is about 150 km away
11. Manali, Himachal Pradesh: a chance of snow
For many people, a winter trip means snow, and Manali is the most reachable place to find it. December and January bring cold, clear days and a good chance of snow in Solang Valley and up through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu.
In town, see the Hadimba Devi Temple, spend an afternoon in the cafés of Old Manali, and soak in the Vashisht hot springs. Eat siddu, the local steamed bread, and Himachali trout.
- Best months: September to January (for snow, December and January) · Ideal trip: 3–5 days
- Stay: Old Manali and Vashisht for budget stays, Aleo and Prini for nicer hotels
- Getting there: most people come by overnight bus from Delhi or Chandigarh; Bhuntar airport is about 50 km away
Rohtang Pass is closed in winter, and roads beyond Manali can close for a day or two after heavy snow. Check the road status before you set out, carry proper layers, and don't drive on snow without chains or a local driver.
12. Kaziranga, Assam: the one-horned rhino
Kaziranga is home to about two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos, and you're almost guaranteed to see them. Winter, after the park reopens following the monsoon floods, is the best time to visit.
Take jeep safaris in the Central and Western ranges for rhinos, wild buffalo and elephants, and the Eastern range for birds. Walk through a tea estate, and eat an Assamese thali or pork with bamboo shoot.
- Best months: November to April · Ideal trip: 2–3 days
- Stay: around Kohora, close to the central range, or in a tea-estate bungalow
- Getting there: the nearest airport, Jorhat, is about 100 km away; Guwahati is a longer but busier option
Book your safari jeep through your stay a day ahead, and remember the park closes from about June to September.
How to plan a winter trip with JrnyLoop
Any of these trips takes a few minutes to plan in JrnyLoop. A few things make winter planning easier.
Add your dates. With a start date, JrnyLoop checks whether the place is in season, shows the forecast for each day once it's close, and warns you about near-freezing nights so you pack properly warm. If rain is likely on an outdoor day, it suggests swapping it with a drier one.
Not sure which one? Open Where can I go?, enter your city, your days, your budget and your dates, and JrnyLoop shows the places that fit, each marked when it's in season. "December is a good time to go" is the kind of reason you'll see beside each one.
Let the packing list do the thinking. A trip to Manali adds a warm jacket, thermals, a woollen cap and gloves. A beach trip adds swimwear and a waterproof phone pouch. A desert trip adds a scarf for dust and a warm layer for the nights.
Plan around the fog. If you're travelling by train in north India in December or January, pick your train in Getting there and give yourself a buffer. If you're running late on the day, Running late? slides the rest of the day for you.
Going with friends or family? Invite them to the trip, run a poll for the dates, and split the costs as you go. Our guide to planning a group trip with friends shows how.
Winter travel tips for India
- Book early for the holidays. Christmas, New Year and long weekends push up prices for stays and flights, especially in Goa, Rajasthan and the hills.
- Pack for two seasons. Many winter places are warm by day and cold at night. Layers beat one heavy jacket.
- Start early in the north. Days are short in December and January, and fog can slow the mornings. Plan your driving for daylight.
- Check what's open. Some sights and parks keep seasonal hours or close for a few weeks. When JrnyLoop plans your days, it leaves out sights that are closed in your month.
- Mix the regions. A week can easily cover two places that work well together: Alleppey and Munnar, Udaipur and Kumbhalgarh, Goa and Gokarna.
Pick your winter trip
There's no wrong answer among these places to visit in India in winter. Whether it's a night in the desert, a houseboat on the backwaters or a snowball fight in Solang, winter is when India is easiest to love.
