New Year's Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year for travel in India, and the places to celebrate New Year in India are as varied as the people who travel then: beach parties that run till sunrise, bonfires in the snow, desert camps with folk music under the stars, lake palaces, Christmas lights in old city streets, and quiet hill towns where the loudest sound at midnight is the crackle of a fire.

This guide covers fifteen of the best places to ring in the new year, grouped by the kind of night you want, with who each place suits, the weather at the end of December, and practical advice on booking, budgets, crowds, transport and safety, because a great New Year trip is mostly about planning early.

The beach

1. Goa

Goa is India's New Year capital. North Goa, from Baga and Calangute to Anjuna, Vagator and Morjim, is packed with beach clubs, shacks and big parties, with fireworks over the beaches at midnight. It's lively, crowded and expensive at this time of year. South Goa, around Palolem, Agonda and Benaulim, is calmer, with beach dinners and quieter celebrations, better for couples and families. Book stays and taxis months in advance. Our Goa trip plan has more.

2. Gokarna

South of Goa, Gokarna celebrates with beach cafés, bonfires and music at Kudle and Om beaches, in a far more relaxed way than Goa. It's a temple town too, so expect a mix of pilgrims and travellers. See our Gokarna trip guide.

3. Varkala

Varkala, in Kerala, has cafés and guesthouses along a red cliff above the sea. New Year here means candle-lit dinners, music and a walk along the cliff, with fireworks on the beach below.

4. Pondicherry

Pondicherry celebrates along the Promenade, with crowds on the seafront, music and fireworks, while the cafés of the French Quarter host dinners. It's festive but manageable, and the weather is mild. See our Chennai to Pondicherry road trip.

5. The Andaman Islands

For a quiet tropical New Year, the Andamans, especially Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep), have beach resorts with dinners and bonfires. It's peak season, so book ferries and stays early. See our Andaman trip plan.

The mountains and the snow

6. Manali and Kasol

Manali fills up with New Year crowds, with parties in Old Manali's cafés and a chance of snow in Solang and Sissu. Nearby Kasol is the backpackers' choice, with cafés and music in the Parvati Valley. Traffic jams on the roads to Solang and the Atal Tunnel can last for hours around New Year, and snow can close roads, so plan carefully. See our Shimla Manali trip and Kasol trip guides.

7. Gulmarg

For a white New Year, Gulmarg in Kashmir is the surest bet, with deep snow, skiing and the Gondola ride up the mountain. Hotels host gala dinners, and the cold is serious, often well below freezing. See our snowfall places in India guide.

8. McLeodganj

McLeodganj has a relaxed New Year, with cafés, live music and views of the snowy Dhauladhar range. It's cold, but less crowded than Manali. See our McLeodganj and Dharamshala trip.

9. Rishikesh

Rishikesh is a different kind of New Year: alcohol and meat aren't sold in the main town, so celebrations centre on the Ganga aarti, yoga, music at the cafés and riverside camps outside town. It suits those who want a peaceful, meaningful start to the year. See our Rishikesh trip guide.

The desert and the palaces

10. Jaisalmer

The desert camps at Sam and Khuri near Jaisalmer host New Year nights with folk music, dance, a bonfire and dinner under the stars. Nights are cold, so pack warm layers. See our Jaisalmer trip guide.

11. Udaipur

Udaipur celebrates with dinners at lakeside hotels and rooftop restaurants overlooking Lake Pichola, fireworks over the water and boat rides. It's romantic and refined. See our guide to places to visit in Udaipur.

The cities

12. Mumbai

Mumbai welcomes the new year with crowds at Marine Drive, the Gateway of India and Juhu, parties across the city and fireworks over the sea. Expect huge crowds and traffic, and use trains or plan your ride home in advance. See our guide to places to visit in Mumbai.

13. Kolkata's Park Street

In Kolkata, Park Street is lit up from Christmas to New Year, with music, crowds and the city's old restaurants and bakeries full. It's festive and very Kolkata.

The quiet hills

14. Shillong

Shillong has a strong music culture and celebrates Christmas and New Year with lights, church services, concerts and cafés. The weather is cool and the mood is warm. See our Meghalaya trip plan.

15. Coorg and Chikmagalur

For a quiet New Year, a coffee estate homestay in Coorg or Chikmagalur means a bonfire, home-cooked food, misty mornings and almost no crowds. See our Coorg trip and Chikmagalur trip guides.

Choosing the right place for your group

  • Friends who want parties: North Goa, Manali, Kasol, Mumbai
  • Couples: South Goa, Varkala, Udaipur, the Andamans, a coffee estate
  • Families: South Goa, Pondicherry, Udaipur, a Jaisalmer camp, the Andamans
  • Solo travellers: Gokarna, Varkala, McLeodganj, Rishikesh
  • Snow lovers: Gulmarg, Manali, Auli
  • Peace and quiet: Rishikesh, coffee estates, Shillong

When to book

New Year is one of the most expensive weeks of the year for travel in India. Hotels in popular places often charge two to three times their normal rates, and many insist on minimum stays of two or three nights. Flights and trains fill up early.

  • Book stays by October or early November for the most popular places.
  • Book trains as soon as booking opens, 60 days before travel, and flights early. Our guides to Tatkal booking and cheap flights in India can help.
  • Check the cancellation policy, as many New Year packages are non-refundable.
  • Read the small print on gala dinners, which are often compulsory at resorts on 31 December.

What a New Year trip costs

Prices vary hugely, but as a rough guide for two people for three nights over New Year:

Type of trip Approximate cost
Backpacker (hostels, buses, cafés) ₹10,000 to ₹25,000
Mid-range (hotels, trains or flights, dinners) ₹40,000 to ₹90,000
Luxury (resorts, gala dinners, flights) ₹1,50,000 and up

Party tickets and gala dinners can add a lot. Consider travelling just after New Year, when prices drop sharply.

Getting around on New Year's Eve

  • Don't drink and drive. Police run checks across India on New Year's Eve.
  • Plan your ride home before midnight, as app cabs and taxis are scarce and expensive after the celebrations.
  • Stay within walking distance of where you'll celebrate, if you can.
  • In the hills, avoid driving after dark, and expect snow and traffic to close roads.
  • In the north, fog can delay trains and flights around New Year, so keep a buffer before your journey home.

Staying safe in New Year crowds

  • Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket or a zipped bag.
  • Agree on a meeting point with your group.
  • Women travellers should stay with friends in big crowds and plan their ride home in advance.
  • Buy party tickets only from official sources, as fake tickets are common.
  • Watch your drink at parties, and don't accept drinks from strangers.
  • Stay off the beach after drinking, and never swim at night.

Our guides to solo travel in India and solo female travel have more safety tips.

Quieter alternatives

If you'd rather avoid the crowds altogether:

  • Spend New Year at home and travel the first week of January, when prices fall.
  • Pick a lesser-known place, like a village homestay in the Himalaya or a temple town in the south. Our guide to offbeat places in India has ideas.
  • Watch the first sunrise of the year on the Ganga in Varanasi, at Kanyakumari or from a hilltop.

Common New Year trip mistakes

  • Booking in December and finding everything full or overpriced.
  • Driving to the hills on 30 or 31 December, and getting stuck in traffic for hours.
  • Not checking the gala dinner charges at resorts.
  • Planning a tight return on 1 January, when trains and flights are full and delays are common.
  • Expecting snow in places where it's uncertain, like Manali in a dry year.

Christmas and New Year in one trip

Many travellers combine Christmas and New Year in one trip, using the week in between. Goa celebrates Christmas with midnight mass in its old churches, carols and stars hung outside homes. Kolkata's Park Street is lit up for the whole week. Shillong has church services, carols and music. In Fort Kochi, the Cochin Carnival runs through the last days of December, ending at midnight on New Year's Eve with the burning of a giant effigy of Pappanji, an old man representing the year gone by. It's one of the most unusual New Year celebrations in India.

The first sunrise of the year

Some of the best ways to start the year are at dawn:

  • Kanyakumari: sunrise over the sea at the southern tip of India.
  • Varanasi: a boat on the Ganga as the sun comes up over the ghats.
  • Tiger Hill, Darjeeling: the first light on Kanchenjunga.
  • Top Station, Munnar: sunrise above the clouds.
  • Chandrabhaga Beach, Konark: sunrise near the Sun Temple.
  • Nandi Hills, near Bengaluru: a sea of clouds on a clear morning.

New Year with children

For families, choose places where the celebrations are fun but not wild: South Goa, Pondicherry, Udaipur, the Andamans or a Jaisalmer desert camp, where children enjoy the camel rides and folk music. Look for hotels that host family-friendly dinners, and celebrate early if the children won't stay awake till midnight. Avoid the most crowded spots, like North Goa's beaches and Mumbai's Marine Drive, with young children. Our guide to a family trip with kids and parents has more tips.

New Year on a budget

New Year is expensive, but it doesn't have to be. Choose places that are less famous, like Gokarna instead of Goa, or McLeodganj instead of Manali, stay in hostels or homestays, travel by train or bus booked well ahead, and celebrate at a beach or a café instead of a ticketed party. Travelling a few days after New Year, when prices drop, also helps. Our guide to how to plan a budget trip in India has more ideas.

Weather at the end of December

Region What to expect
The north Indian plains Cold, with fog in the mornings and nights; days around 15 to 20°C
The Himalaya Very cold, often below freezing at night, with snow in higher places
Rajasthan Sunny days and cold nights, especially in the desert
Goa, Kerala and Karnataka's coast Warm and sunny, with pleasant evenings
The Andamans Warm and sunny, the peak season
The Northeast hills Cool days and cold nights

New Year for couples

For couples, a New Year trip is about finding the right balance between celebration and quiet. South Goa, Varkala and the Andamans offer beach dinners and calm nights, Udaipur has candlelit dinners overlooking Lake Pichola, and a coffee estate in Coorg or Chikmagalur means a bonfire and a sky full of stars. Book a room with a view, choose a hotel's dinner over a crowded party, and spend New Year's Day doing nothing at all. Our guide to honeymoon destinations in India has more ideas.

New Year for solo travellers

Solo travellers will find plenty of company at hostels in Gokarna, Varkala, McLeodganj, Kasol and Rishikesh, many of which host New Year events and group dinners. Choose a well-reviewed hostel close to where you'll celebrate, plan your way back before midnight, and stay with people you trust in big crowds.

The short version

The best places to celebrate New Year in India depend on your crowd: North Goa, Manali and Mumbai for parties; South Goa, Varkala, Udaipur and the Andamans for couples; Pondicherry, Jaisalmer's desert camps and Udaipur for families; Gulmarg for snow; and Rishikesh, Shillong or a coffee estate for a quiet start to the year. Book by October or early November, check minimum stays and gala dinner charges, plan your ride home, and keep a buffer for the journey back.
