A night on an Alleppey houseboat is the highlight of most Kerala trips. You board a kettuvallam, a long wooden rice barge with a curved roof of woven palm, and drift through the backwaters of Kuttanad, past paddy fields that lie below sea level, village churches, toddy shops and duck farms, while a cook on board prepares lunch, tea and a Kerala dinner. When the boat moors for the night, the only sounds are the water and the frogs.
It's also easy to get wrong. Alleppey has more than a thousand houseboats, from simple to luxurious, and two boats that look the same in a photo can be very different experiences. This guide explains the types of boat, what a day and an overnight cruise include, real prices, the routes, the AC rules, and how to book a good one.
How an Alleppey houseboat cruise works
| Overnight cruise | Day cruise | |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in | Around noon | Around 11 am |
| Check-out | Around 9 am the next day | Around 5 pm |
| Meals | Lunch, evening tea, dinner and breakfast | Lunch and evening tea |
| Cruising | Afternoon cruise, then moored for the night | A few hours on the water |
| Best for | The full experience | A tight budget or schedule |
On an overnight cruise, the boat sails through the afternoon and moors by around 5:30 pm. Under local rules, houseboats don't cruise at night, which keeps the waterways free for fishing. You'll spend the evening moored by a village or a paddy field, and the boat usually moves again for an hour after breakfast before returning to the jetty.
Because cruising stops in the evening, an overnight Alleppey houseboat is about the experience of being on the water, not covering distance. If you want to see more of the backwaters, a day cruise plus a shikara ride the next morning is a good combination.
Types of houseboat
| Category | What you get | AC |
|---|---|---|
| Deluxe | Clean, simple bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a sitting deck | Usually only at night, often about 9 pm to 6 am |
| Premium | Better interiors, more space, better food, often an upper deck | Often more hours of AC, sometimes full-time |
| Luxury | Glass-walled or air-conditioned living areas, designer rooms | Full-time AC |
Boats range from one to ten bedrooms. Couples usually book a one-bedroom boat; families and groups book two or more. Shared houseboats, where you book a single room on a bigger boat with other guests, are cheaper but less private.
Alleppey houseboat prices
Prices depend on the category, the number of bedrooms, the season and how far ahead you book. As a rough guide for a one-bedroom overnight cruise with all meals:
| Category | Off-season (June to August) | Peak season (December and January) |
|---|---|---|
| Deluxe | about ₹6,000 to ₹9,000 | about ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 |
| Premium | about ₹9,000 to ₹14,000 | about ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 |
| Luxury | ₹15,000 and up | ₹25,000 and up |
Each extra bedroom adds a little less than the first. Day cruises usually cost about half to two-thirds of an overnight cruise. Christmas, New Year and Onam are the most expensive times.
If you're travelling as a group of four or six, a two or three-bedroom boat often works out cheaper per person than a hotel, with all meals included.
The best time for an Alleppey houseboat
- September to March is the main season, with pleasant weather. December and January are busiest.
- April and May are hot and humid, but prices are lower and the boats are quieter.
- June to August is the monsoon. The backwaters are beautiful in the rain and prices are at their lowest, but cruising can be cut short in heavy weather.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held on Punnamada Lake on the second Saturday of August, is the most famous of Kerala's snake boat races and one of the most exciting events in the state.
Routes: where do houseboats go?
Most Alleppey houseboats start from the Punnamada or Finishing Point jetties near Alleppey town and cruise through two kinds of water:
- Vembanad Lake: the largest lake in Kerala, wide and open, with big skies and sunsets
- The Kuttanad canals: narrow, shaded channels through villages and paddy fields, where you see everyday backwater life up close
A good cruise includes both. Ask the operator about the route before you book. Some cheaper boats stay close to the busy jetty area.
Alleppey or Kumarakom? Kumarakom, on the other side of Vembanad Lake, is quieter, with lakeside resorts and a bird sanctuary. Its houseboats are fewer and often pricier. Alleppey has more choice and is better for a first trip.
What the food is like
Meals are cooked fresh on board and are usually Kerala-style: rice, sambar, avial, thoran, a fish curry or karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish cooked in banana leaf), and payasam. Breakfast is often appam with stew or puttu with kadala curry. Most boats can cook vegetarian, Jain or North Indian food on request, so mention it when you book. Some will buy fresh fish or prawns from a village on the way, for an extra cost.
How to book a good Alleppey houseboat
- Book directly or through a trusted platform, and check recent reviews with photos taken by guests, not just the operator's pictures.
- Ask for photos of the actual boat you'll get, including the bedroom and bathroom.
- Confirm the AC hours in writing. This is the single most common complaint.
- Ask about the route. Will the boat go into the Kuttanad canals or stay near the jetty?
- Check what's included: all meals, drinking water, evening tea, and whether there are extra charges for fish or alcohol.
- Look for registration and safety: a licensed boat, life jackets and a working generator.
- Pay a deposit, not the full amount, to unknown operators.
Touts at Alleppey station and the bus stand offer "cheap" last-minute houseboats. Some are fine, but many are old boats on short routes with poor food. Book ahead, especially in season.
What to pack
- Mosquito repellent, as the evenings bring mosquitoes even with nets
- Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for the upper deck
- Light cotton clothes and a light layer for the AC at night
- Motion sickness tablets if you're sensitive, though the water is usually calm
- A book, cards or music, since there's no Wi-Fi on most boats
- A torch or power bank for the evening
Cheaper ways to see the backwaters
Not every backwater experience needs a houseboat:
- Shikara rides: small covered boats that go into narrow canals, about ₹400 or more an hour, and great in the early morning
- Kayaking tours: quiet, close to the water and popular with younger travellers
- The government ferry: State Water Transport ferries between Alleppey and Kottayam take a couple of hours through the backwaters for a very small fare. It's the cheapest backwater cruise in Kerala.
- A homestay on the water: villages like Kainakary have homestays by the canals, with canoe trips from the door
Fitting a houseboat into a Kerala trip
The classic route is Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, then a night on an Alleppey houseboat, then the beaches of Varkala or Kovalam. Our 7-day Kerala itinerary puts it all together with drive times. Thekkady to Alleppey is about 4½ hours by road, so leave early if your houseboat boards at noon.
A private houseboat is also one of the most romantic nights in India, which is why it features in our list of honeymoon destinations in India.
A typical overnight houseboat cruise, hour by hour
- 11:30 to 12:00: check-in at the jetty. The crew welcomes you with a fresh coconut or juice, and you settle into your bedroom.
- 12:30: the boat sets off across Vembanad Lake or into the canals.
- 13:30: lunch on board: rice, sambar, avial, thoran, fish fry or curry, pickles and papad.
- 15:00: cruise past paddy fields, villages, churches and duck farms. Some boats stop at a village so you can walk along the bund.
- 16:30: evening tea with banana fritters (pazham pori).
- 17:30: the boat moors for the night, often beside paddy fields.
- 19:30 to 20:30: dinner on board, then a quiet evening on deck.
- Morning: sunrise over the water, breakfast of appam and stew or puttu and kadala, and a short cruise back to the jetty by around 9 am.
Choosing the right boat for your group
- Couples: a one-bedroom premium boat, ideally with an upper deck, gives you privacy and the best views.
- Families with young children: a boat with railings all round the deck and an air-conditioned bedroom. Ask whether life jackets in children's sizes are on board.
- Families with older parents: look for a boat with the bedroom and bathroom on the lower deck, and steps that are easy to manage.
- Groups of friends: two or three-bedroom boats work out cheaper per person than a hotel and include all meals.
- Solo travellers: shared houseboats, where you book a single cabin, are the most affordable option.
Houseboats and the environment
With more than a thousand houseboats on Vembanad Lake and the canals, pollution has become a serious concern. Choose a boat with a licence and a proper waste and sewage system, ask whether it uses solar power or a cleaner generator, and avoid throwing anything into the water. Kerala Tourism has encouraged greener boats and responsible tourism practices around Alleppey and Kumarakom, and choosing operators who follow them makes a difference.
Kumarakom: the quieter side of the lake
Kumarakom, on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, is the calmer alternative to Alleppey. It has lakeside resorts, many with their own boats, and the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, best visited early in the morning from November to February, when migratory birds arrive. Kumarakom is also known for its responsible tourism projects, where villagers show visitors coir-making, toddy tapping, fishing and village cooking. A night in a Kumarakom lake resort and a day cruise is a great alternative to a full houseboat night.
Alleppey beyond the houseboat
Don't leave without seeing a little of Alleppey itself:
- Alleppey Beach and its old pier, best at sunset
- Marari Beach, a quiet fishing-village beach about 15 km north
- Kuttanad's paddy fields, farmed below sea level, best explored by canoe or bicycle
- St Mary's Church at Champakulam, one of the oldest churches in Kerala
- The Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna temple, famous for its sweet palpayasam
Houseboat mistakes to avoid
- Booking at the jetty without seeing the boat, especially in peak season.
- Assuming the AC runs all day on a deluxe boat.
- Expecting to cover a lot of distance, when boats moor by evening.
- Not mentioning dietary needs until you're on board.
- Bringing large suitcases. Space on board is limited; pack a small overnight bag.
Alleppey with children and older parents
A houseboat is a good trip for all ages, with no walking and lots to see. For families, choose a boat with an upper deck where children can watch the water, check that the deck has railings, and carry snacks and games for the slow afternoon hours. For older parents, choose a boat with a bedroom on the lower deck, an attached bathroom with a western toilet, and air conditioning at night. Ask about the steps to board the boat, which can be steep.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Held on Punnamada Lake in Alleppey, usually on the second Saturday of August, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of Kerala's great sporting events. Chundan vallams (snake boats), each over 100 feet long and rowed by around 100 oarsmen, race to the rhythm of boat songs. Tickets for the stands sell out, so book early, and expect houseboat prices to rise around the race.
Alleppey beyond the backwaters
Alleppey town has its own charms: the Alleppey Beach and its old pier and lighthouse, the canals that gave it the nickname the "Venice of the East", and the coir industry, which you can see in workshops near the town. Marari Beach, about 15 km north, is quiet and beautiful, and a good place to rest after the houseboat. Ambalappuzha's Sri Krishna temple, south of the town, is famous for its sweet milk payasam.
Houseboat safety
- Choose a licensed houseboat with a registration number from the tourism department.
- Check for life jackets on board, including children's sizes.
- Don't swim in the backwaters, which can be deep, with weeds and boat traffic.
- Keep children away from the edges of the deck, and watch them at all times.
- Ask about fire safety, including where the extinguishers are.
- Check the weather before you go, and don't board in a storm.
Plan your Kerala trip with JrnyLoop
Tell JrnyLoop where you're starting and add Alleppey to your Kerala trip, and it plans the route with realistic drive times so you reach the jetty in time to board, schedules the houseboat for the afternoon and a shikara ride for the morning, and budgets the trip for your group in your chosen stay style. Pin your houseboat booking in the plan, and if you change anything else, the rest of the trip is replanned around it.

The short version
Book an overnight cruise on a deluxe or premium one-bedroom boat between September and March, directly from a well-reviewed operator. Ask for photos of the actual boat, confirm the AC hours and the route through the Kuttanad canals, and mention any food preferences. Board at noon, watch the sunset over Vembanad, and take a shikara into the narrow canals the next morning.
