Things to do in Murshidabad
Hazarduari Palace
Hazarduari Palace is a 19th-century palace-museum of the Nawabs located near the Ganges river in Murshidabad. Designed by Colonel Duncan McLeod in the Neoclassical Italianate style, it now serves as a national monument and public cultural museum.
Tip: Remember that the monument remains closed on Fridays
Nizamat Imambara
Bengal’s largest imambara is a grand Shi'ite congregation hall located in Murshidabad. Originally built by Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah in 1740 CE and later rebuilt in 1847 after fires, it stands alongside the Hazarduari Palace as a protected monument.
Tip: Dress modestly as it is a place of religious significance.
Katra Masjid
A former Shia caravanserai, mosque and tomb located in Murshidabad. Built in the eighteenth century, the complex contains the tomb of founder Nawab Murshid Quli Khan and features two large corner towers with loopholes for musketry.
Tip: Look out for the damage caused by the historical earthquake of eighteen ninety seven.
Khushbagh
Khushbagh is a peaceful garden-cemetery on the west bank of the Hooghly river in Murshidabad. It is the final resting place of the Nawabs of Bengal of the Afshar dynasty and their family members. Visitors can see the graves of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah and Alivardi Khan here.
Tip: Take a short boat ride across the river from Murshidabad to reach the west bank.
