Plan this tripAbout Amarnath Cave
The holy cave where an ice Shivling forms each summer — reached on the short, steep Baltal trail or the longer, gentler Pahalgam route past Sheshnag lake, only during the yatra in July–August.
Things to do in Amarnath Cave
Holy Cave (Amarnath Ji)
The ice lingam inside a cave at 3,888 m; darshan in a fast-moving queue.
Baltal–Holy Cave Trek
14 km each way, short but steep; ponies and palkis available.
Chandanwari–Sheshnag–Panchtarni Route
The traditional 36 km route over Mahagunas Pass, done over 2–3 days.
Sheshnag Lake
Glacial lake below seven peaks, the first night halt on the Pahalgam route.
Neelgrath–Panchtarni Helicopter
Shuttle from near Baltal to Panchtarni, 6 km below the cave (one way).
Sonamarg Meadows
Rest day on the Sindh river meadows before or after the yatra.
Where to stay in Amarnath Cave
Baltal base camp
Tents at the start of the short route — one-day return possible.
Sonamarg
Proper hotels 15 km before Baltal.
Pahalgam & Nunwan camp
Base for the traditional three-day route.
What to eat
Yatra langars
Free community kitchens all along both routes — hot, hearty and vegetarian.
Kahwa
Saffron tea at the base camps.
Good to know
- Register for the yatra on the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board portal and get the Compulsory Health Certificate — no registration, no entry.
- Only people aged 13–70 are allowed, and pregnant women past six weeks cannot go.
- Carry rain gear and warm layers; weather turns fast and the route is closed on bad days.
