Things to do in Agra
Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the right bank of the river Yamuna in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. Commissioned by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the complex also includes a mosque, a guest house, and formal gardens.
Tip: Go at sunrise.
Agra Fort
Agra Fort is a red sandstone fort with Taj views that served as the main residence of Mughal rulers. Built by Emperor Akbar, it features white marble palaces and mosques added by Shah Jahan, along with historic gateways like the Delhi Gate.
Tip: Wear comfortable footwear as you explore the large complex
Mehtab Bagh
Mehtab Bagh is a charbagh garden complex located north of the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River. Measuring about 300 by 300 metres, it is perfectly aligned with the Taj Mahal. The ground becomes partially flooded during the rainy season.
Itimad-ud-Daulah
Itimad-ud-Daulah, often called the Baby Taj, is a delicate Mughal mausoleum in Agra commissioned by Empress Nur Jahan for her father. Built between 1622 and 1628, this white-marble jewel box serves as a key transitional work in Mughal architecture and features intricate pietra dura inlay work.
Tip: Look out for the octagonal towers at each corner of the main square mausoleum structure.
Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is Akbar’s abandoned red city located 40 km away from Agra. Founded as the Mughal Empire capital in 1571, this historic walled city and imperial palace features the earlier khanqah of Sheikh Salim Chishti.
Tip: Wear comfortable footwear for walking extensively across the stone courtyards.
Kinari Bazaar
Kinari Bazaar is a vibrant market located in the old-city lanes of Agra. Visitors can explore narrow alleys filled with shops offering local sweets, snacks, and traditional goods.
